Over the past year I have been working on a body of work influenced by “slasher” films, the representation of women within them and the relationship between these elements and young women living alone for the first time and embarking on their independent lives. More recently, the work has also had a more pronounced emphasis on the idea of personal space as a personal ‘force-field’ and the use of cluttered possessions and a strong sense of personality in a space as a way of keeping the inhabitant safe from the pressures and dangers of the world outside. The work has mainly taken the form of video installations combining footage from slasher films and self-shot footage juxtaposed together in a mixture of projection and monitor displays. Recent photographic work has also introduced the concept of a blurred image as a protective barrier which is echoed in the most recent installation work.
