eleanorbarreau.co.ukEleanor Barreau currently produces work that predominantly focuses on women and the way in which they are represented through advertising. Due to the different surges of feminism and other social developments over the past 60 years the ‘ideal’ woman that advertising has tried to emulate has gradually culminated into something that is now unreal. As the year has progressed her work has shifted from the observation and analysis of women in advertising pre the 1980’s to concentrating purely on contemporary advertising targeted at women. From her investigation and sourcing of images of women from Vogues in 2010, she came to the conclusion that the concept of feminine beauty has evolved from a voluptuous ideal to an androgynous yet overtly sexual being, an almost unachievable illusion if you will. The underlying concern is that even with the dramatic improvements to women rights in western society over the past century, one thing has remained the same; one might say worsened - the fixation on female aesthetics and the extent to which women still dominate advertising imagery. The artist is exploring these issues within her practice and expresses this within the paintings that she creates. The way in which she has aimed to do so is by constructing feasible interactions between women from separate advertisements, however through the process in which she paints them she is trying to push the boundaries of their form before they morph into a unified figure.
